Snail is an invertebrate animal called Mollusca (Phylum). The group is charaterized by possession of shell.The snails creeps on any surface through its foot.It consists of two parts namely the body and the shell.The body is made of three parts - head,foot,and viscera.They may be aquatic,terrestial or amphibious but we are going to talk about the terrestrial snails ( Land snails).Three land snails namely: Archatina achatina,Archatina marginata and Achatina fulica will be mention here because of their size and accptability by a large populace.They are all refereed to as African Gaint Snails.
Arhatina achatina
It can be found in south west Nigeria.The shell is broadly ovate with regular conical spine and narrow posterior end.The shell is brown with zigzag brown black stripes.The flesh part is dark with white patches.When matures it weighs about 600g and lays about 50 eggs or more per cluth.Each egg weighs between 0.3-0.7g.Its originated from east Africa.
Archatina marginata
It is wider at the posterior and it is the biggest of all the breeds and weighs between 600-800g when matured.The shell is brown with deep brown stripes and the foot is black in colour.It lay between 4-16 eggs cluth.Each egg weighs between 2-5g.It is the commonest type of snail in Nigeria.
Achatina fulica
It is of small size.At maturity it weighs 20-30g.It lays 30-50egg per cluch.Egg size is 0.6-1.4g.It has a strong shell which is pale brown and off white.It also originated from east Africa.
