Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, established a snail farm with the assistance of the National Biotechnology Development Agency, the Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Grace Ekpiwhre, has said.
The minister disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday at the 2008 ministerial press briefing by the ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication.
The construction of the snail farm began in 2006 although it opened for production on May 12, 2007.
Apart from the establishment of the farm, our correspondent learnt that NABDA officials trained workers of the Obasanjo Farms before handing over the project.
It was also learnt that within five months after the establishment, the farm, which began operations with 10,000 snails, had produced 80,000 adult male snails.
Our correspondent also that the former President has not commenced selling snails from the farm because he has a target to grow the number to 500,000 before it opens up as a commercial enterprise.
Ekpiwhre said, “The former President was impressed with what he saw at NABDA’s Bioresources Development Centre, Odi, Bayelsa State, and therefore, sought the assistance of NABDA for the construction of a modern snailery in his Ota Farm.
“The adoption of commercial, by the former President at such a big scale through NABDA’s intervention is a major boost to the dissemination of commercial snail farming in Nigeria .”
She listed other collaborative relationship of the ministry to include the establishment of re-circulatory fish farms at Zaria and Lagos and the establishment of a banana/plantain farm in collaboration with the Kogi State Government.
The minister also disclosed that the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency had started the digital documentation of medicinal, aromatic and pesticidal plants, animals, animal parts and minerals used in traditional medicines.
According to her, “The ultimate objective of this documentation initiative is to develop a comprehensive national inventory of Nigeria’s MAPs, animals and animal parts and no-medication sciences and technologies used for human and veterinary/livestock healthcare management, maintenance, care and support.”
