Snails must have a plentiful supply of calcium to build and repair their shells. Keep a piece of cuttlefish bone in their tank at all times. Cuttlefish bones are cheap. It’s worth buying them in bulk because they are cheaper that way.
Keep a washed cuttlefish bone in the tank and you will see them rasping away at it. Large growing snails can demolish it in no time. Other sources of calcium include eggshell, calcium supplements from pets shops, oyster shells, natural chalk and baby milk powder.
Snails can also feed on the following ;
Leaves: cocoyam leaves, pawpaw leaves, okra leaves, cassava leaves, eggplant leaves, cabbage leaves, lettuce leaves etc.
Fruits: pawpaw, banana, eggplant, pears tomatoes oil palm fruits, cucumber etc
Disease and pest control in the snail farm
It is recommended to the farmers that a hygienic environment of snails can prevent the spread of disease and improve the health and grow rate of snails. For example, removing or replacing daily food to avoid spoilage.
Farmers should add earthworms to the soil that helps to keep the pen clean and also have a concern about intestinal infections that causes for the bacterium Pseudomonas.
Harvesting the Snail
If your snails have grown well, some of them will be big enough to harvest about one year after you have first put snails in the pen.
If you need any snail to put in another pen, collect them first. Choose the right number of the biggest and best snails.
Carefully put these snails into a container so that you can carry them to the other pen without hurting them.
The easiest time to find the snails is when the plants are wet after it has rained or at night when there is dew and they are moving about or eating.
You can also put out some of the food that snails like and when they come to eat it, you can collect them easily.
When you are harvesting, handle your snails carefully and put them into a container such as a box or a basket or a net sack.
